Here are some e-mail I have recieved concerning Global Village Products...

It was produced through a licensing agreement with Global Village, but is Apple's product. So, do you love or hate Apple now, Global Village has nothing to do with it! Just thought you might like to know the facts while you were shooting your mouth off. I am surprised nobody has set you straight before now.
I feel we have something in commom. I am an Internet Service Provider. I just tried to hook a new client with a Teleport Bronze for Performa. That damn thing wouldn't even make a connection! I called Apple and they told me that he should just upgrade to a faster modem. So I guess if my Mac people got stuck with this pile of crap then they must have to upgrade??? This is really good for my business. "The first thing you need to do is upgrade your modem for about $150 dollars, then we can get you online." If I was the user I would have to want Internet access really bad... Regards Jon A. Albrecht jon@cio.net Computer Innovations Online www.cio.net Skagit County's Premier Internet Service Provider
hi And I am glad to see someone speak their mind with regard to products that do not perform as one would expect--no matter what the cost. I am in a different situation and am wondering if you can help. I do PC work and an occasional Mac... a customer of mine has a performa with the GV 2400 modem she uses to access AOL(!) and her work--a DEC VAX ..uses White pines terminal emulation software...all of a sudden the thing does not want to connect and a modem swap with another GV has no positive effect! Had you any success getting to Global Village for support of this type and, if so, how did you get to them? Thanks Joe -- Joseph P. Trying to get modem to work with SoftWindows 3.0s (& Mac/OS) for internet e-mail access using JUNO and getting no where. Pull down Rockwell's fix...tried all sorts of combinations but nothing!! Any clues!!! --
I have a Performa 6218 which came with a internal 14.4 GV Modem.. I dont know if there is a problem with the Modem Hardware but i am sure that there is a problem with the init/cdev. When the GV extentions are loaded, my printer (HP 540) doesnt function, when i disable the extentions via extention manager the printer is fine. My guess Apple shipped a component before ensuring that the modem' extentions work properly. Harveyg@shadow.net
Subject: Apple, Global Village To the idiot who responded that global village isn't responsible for the "Performa Bronze" because it's made for apple, BullSh*t, is apple assembling the thing, are they the ones creating the bastard 12 annex protocol for 33.6 conncetions, global Village is and they are the ones "building" it, and its the global village modem that sucks!
Subject: crappy modem! Hi! I am trying to get my boyfriend's mom hooked to the internet. She had a Glob. Vil. Bronze modem=junk. She bought a fast mac v.34 modem but we are having major problems. I have an IBM, so I am not familiar with macs. So, here is the problem. We don't know what to use. We tried the Hayes V series, and a few others. The help desk for the package she purchased said that the problem is with the init. string message??? They were of no help at all. They said to contact the place she got the modem, but it was mail order and their tech support # wants to charge 2.00 per minute to help. So, I found your web page and thought maybe you might have a simple incredible easy solution that would not annoy you as much as I think I am annoying you. The PPP config window is where we were, but I am a major computer dummy and don't know what else to do. If you could help, I would appreciate it. I enjoyed your web page! If you can't help, do you know where or who I could go to for help??? Thanks so much! Sincerely, Kris Kelley
I started with the GV Bronze. No trouble, but slow as a wet week. I sold it to a relative (wouldn't dare sell it to a friend!), then bought a GV Gold. Even better with images off. Sold that to a friend for a great price. Bought a GV 33k6. Excellent. I have never had any trouble with any of these modems. In fact the only problems I have had trying to get online has been through the ISPs I have used.

I got a Teleport Gold modem with my 6115CD. It was a ok for speed but I had problems with crashes when it was in use. I bought US Robotics Sportster Voice 28.8/33.6 - no problems. I donated the Teleport Gold to a poor church using an LC III with no modem. After all, a lousy modem is better than no modem. They couldn't even plug it into the back of their CPU because of the specially modified connector on the TP Gold. I felt so bad for getting their hopes up that I told them to shitcan it and I bought them a Supra 28.8. I have a buddy with a TP Bronze that's having problems. I told him I would drop by the GV site & download one of the many software patches (i.e. error correction). The GV software didn't even have error correction! My experience with GV modems has been nothing but headaches. They want top dollar for their product, they come with zippo for features and they have problems to boot! It would take a drastic change in GV's products before I would even think about buying again. As for you comment about not paying for you TP Bronze, you did pay for it, it was built into the price of you performa.
I hate my Global Village Teleport II for the Power Mac Performa. I used to blame my server for poor service, but a friend came to visit who designs web pages (ie actually knows something about my computer and its devices) and was configuring my Mac so he could retrieve his e-mail. His invective--in regard to the modem--was in a category which would make Martin Scorcese blush. I will keep this short, but the most obvious thing about this ridiculous piece of crap is that there is no off switch, which means when it hangs, without connecting, you have to walk into the other room, pick up your extension phone, fiddle with the receiver, bang the extension back down, walk back into the room with the Mac, and wait for the idiot piece to realize it's just hanging in mid air.
Bought a GV Platinum 28.8 fax/modem approx. two years ago and never had any problems. The unit at the time was one of the best modem on the market. I also find the fax software to be the best I have ever tested on Macs. JPT, Geneva Switzerland
Yessiree! When I "upgraded" to a new Mac from an LCIII to a Performa 6230 w/ all its bells and whistles, I got perhaps the worst combination of GV Gold internal 14.4 modem/telecom garbage and computer ever marketed by Apple. I'm a tech support specialist and I can't make this piece of crap work right, no matter how many different modem init strings, versions of TCP/PPP or any amount of "help" from that joke/oxymoron called Apple tech support. The run around goes like this... Apple says call GV...GV says that because this is a "special" product made for Apple, to call Apple for tech support..catch 22.
I have an LC520 and a Supra 144LC modem. After experiencing annoying interruptions(freeze-up of link) and slow speed, I asked my local net provider what to do.They suggested an ISDN line and a digital modem such as the Cardinal. This sounds like an expensive upgrade. What do you suggest? Howard
Help, after speaking or Emailing the fine folks at Global Village, they told me that they would NOT! without payment sent replacement S/W for a Bronze modem that came with a Performa 430 that I had the joy of trying to add a new 1 gig scsi to. All S/w seemed to transfer fine except the lousey fax stuff, and with no disks to re-install I'm basicly hosed. The guy even bought the send or receive software, can't remember which didn't come with it. Got any ideas? with the old drive installed everything works fine, with new drive everything works fine EXCEPT the stupid fax center, keeps telling to re-install, From what I ask the fine people at G.V. they say from the other crummy SW we want to sell you. Anyway enough of my rambling, Please respond if you have time. Thanks Dan
Hi my friend I do AOK with this modom with my old mac 630 cd. I had to add a little extra ram 16mb and ass is fine next step later.
I have had difficulty with this modem and have configured it all the ways I can think of. Apple has given me direction, but the problem has not been resolved. The last comment I got was to trash the pref. and reboot to see if the app was the problem. If it is, I should trash the whole thing and start over!!!!!!! I have a Performa 6320 with the latest version of Platnum V. I can send three of four lines, but not the entire document. I can't fax registration forms. What do I do????? My Email is andersong@hnk.softfarm.com
Dear Sir; My search brought me to you. If you have time, please e-mail me. My modem/computer is GV platinum with a 638 cd performa 20 RAM. I have a times had disconnects one right after the other. I have my fax extension off. I have ram doubler shut off. Virtual memmory on or off seems to make no difference. I have had problems with no matter who the server is. I am very frustrated about the whole thing. I can not get any answers that are more than...try this try that. But I would appreciate an answer even if you have no idea. Thanks Greg Ranger
